COMMUNION

Ø  Jonathan & David enter into covenant. (David covenants provide a theological understanding of Jesus)
Ø  Jonathan gives up all that he owns, and binds himself to David’s life. Jonathan’s unity with David involves him risking everything for the sake of his beloved.
Ø  Jonathan is presented as the royal heir to the throne of Israel, a great warrior, and the eldest son of the king. However, David is presented as the youngest of many sons, and from an insignificant family from an obscure part of the kingdom. Yet Jonathan’s love for David is adoptive and life changing. During their first covenant encounter, Jonathan “stripped himself of the robe that he was wearing, and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.” which signify the royal authority conferred upon him.
Ø  Luke 15:22 > Jesus, in the parable of the prodigal son, describes the Kingdom of God using the image of a father who clothes his prodigal son and puts a ring on his hand when he returns from a far country.
Ø  Because of their covenant, Jonathan’s love for David is relational. Likewise, John 15:15 describes the relational dynamic between Jesus and his followers evolving from slaves to friends.
Ø  Jonathan’s love for David is not bound by death, and lasts for generations. Jonathan’s only surviving son, Mephiboseth, is invited by King David to dine at the royal table--demonstrating a love that surpasses even death.
Ø  2 Samuel 9:7 > Mephiboseth, the son of Jonathan received kings kindness, kings fellowship, kings richness. David showed kindness to him for his father Jonathan’s sake.
Ø  The Body of Christ is invited to freely participate in a mutual covenant with God. This is a covenant reality which shatters hierarchical understandings of power and value, confers upon us authority and identity, and enables us to intercede for and to restore us back to our rightful places in the family of God.
Ø  John 20:13- Love cast out all fear. There is no fear in love: but perfect love cast out fear
1.      John 20:15 > received intimacy. You can have intimate relationship with your Heavenly Father.
2.      John 20:17 > you have quality. Jesus elevates you to a position that you can have same relationship to Father likewise Jesus has with Father.
§  Romans 7:28; God is in business in making you like his Son.
§  Hebrews 1:1-3 > (1) Jesus had appointed heirs of all things. (2) Jesus had created of all things. (3) Jesus is radiance of God. (4) Jesus expresses himself. (5) Jesus upholds all things by Word (6) Jesus finish the work of God.
3.      John 20:19-20 > in the midst of all the trouble, we have peace from Jesus.
4.      John 20:21 > we have same authority.
5.      John 20:23 > Power of agreement.
Ø  Psalm 51:10-12-In OT sin was covered, in NT sin was removed.
1.      Give me steadfast Spirit that delivers me from the temptation.
2.      Do not take away your Holy Spirit, cast away from your presence.
3.      Generous spirit
