Lord's Supper

A.   HOLY COMMUNION / LORD’S SUPPER

The Lord’s Supper gives us an opportunity for spiritual growth and blessings if we approach it in the right attitude.
1 Corinthians 11:24-26 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”  In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

It is a remarkable thing that Jesus wants His followers to remember His death. Most of us try to forget how those we love died, but Jesus wants us to remember how He died. Why? Everything we have as Christians centers in that death. This is the gospel message. It is not the life of our Lord, or His teachings that will save sinners-but His death.

However, this “remembering” is not simply the recalling of historical facts. It is a participation in Spiritual realities.  We have fellowship with a living Savior as our hearts reach out by faith. The Communion is not supposed to be a time of grief, even though confession of sin is important. It should be a time of thanksgiving and joyful anticipation of seeing the Lord.

B.   GOOD SHEPHERD

Jesus pointed out three special ministries that He performs as the Good Shepherd.
1.       He dies for the sheep. John 10:11-13
2.       He knows the sheep.  John 10:14-15
3.       He has a threefold relationship to His sheep.
a.    Personal relationship. John 10:27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them and they follow me.”
b.    Permanent relationship. John 10:28 “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish…”
c.    Protected relationship.  John 10:29  “…no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand…”
